I hope everyone had fun and stayed safe during the holidays. I know the North East Coast didn’t really get to have a Halloween this year because of Hurricane Sandy but I think we made up for that during Thanksgiving, Christmas, and New Year’s Eve. I was lucky enough to able to spend the weekend before Halloween in Mystic Falls (actually Covington, GA) with the cast of the Vampire Diaries and had a blast, as usual. I was also fortunate enough to be able to sit down with Nadia Romanov, a genuine practicing witch during my time in LA. I thought it would be a great opportunity to explore something we don’t know lots about. It reinforced a notion that I have always held to be true. Spirituality comes in many forms and most spiritual people are concerned about the same basic things. It also confirmed my belief that intention is a very powerful force. Q: Tell me a little about your family and heritage? When did you find out you came from a line of Romanian Witches?
A: My great-great grandmother, Rebecca Romanov was born and raised in Busteni, Romania. She was well known from her early teenage years as being highly intuitive, and was a very sought after card and tea leaf reader, just as her mother and grandmother had been. When she came to America she was more discreet about her mystical gifts, knowing that they were not as widely accepted as in the old country. I remember as a very small girl, wondering why so many ladies came to visit her ‘for tea’ but they never drank any ~ I had no idea at the time that she was reading their tea leaves. I also recall her two decks of cards that she kept in her sewing basket – a traditional Tarot deck as well as a deck of regular playing cards which are also read by Gypsies as a form of fortune telling. It was not until my mid-twenties when I began on my own spiritual path, that it lead me backwards in time to my magickal lineage – a bloodline originating in Romania and Russia, that was highly versed in gypsy and witch magick. Re-discovering this part of my history was like coming home.
Q: Is Magick real in the sense of what we see on television or is it more subtle than that?
A: Magick is VERY real, however it does not happen the way we see it on TV. Magick is the directing of the energies that flow all around us in the Universe, through our focused intent. This is truly the way all spiritual paths work – we pray, we cast spells, we utilize various words, traditional rites, symbolic items all to help us focus our intent, but truly ….magick is the directing of the flow of energy to the outcome we desire…with the intent that it manifests for us, that it is for our greater good and is granted to us. No one shoots flames from their fingertips BUT we can create the life we desire.
Q: Do you believe in Dark Magick, evil spirits, and the like? Do “monsters” exist?
A: I know for a fact that dark magick exists though I do not practice my magick in that way. Really there is no method of magick that is dark or light. 
Our intentions and motives are what determine the type of magick or rather what aspect of our inner selves the magick is coming from. Evil spirits, demons, and other such monstrous entities do indeed exist. There is balance in all – if we believe in Angels, which many of us do of course, then we must acknowledge that there is a counterbalancing flip side to that.
Q: What can people do to better connect with their spiritual side?
A: I LOVE this question, because for me – this is precisely my mission in life, my destined work, is helping people do just that – connect with their spirituality. A main key to connecting with our spiritual side, is to become more aware, present, and aligned with the Universe around us. Being aware of the daily planetary aspects – not some ketchy horoscope – but truly knowing what energies are shifting for us each day, we can choose our words and actions more wisely and productively. Understanding what physical ailments are alert signs to emotional and spiritual work and lessons that need to be attended to. We are all part of an energy flow and learning about that – through any spiritual path will add much health, happiness, fulfillment, and success to one’s life. I recommend that people begin with gratitude – be it journaling it, creating a personal ritual of stating it aloud, lighting a candle (small one) every morning and/or evening to express what they are grateful for….health, blue skies, friends…anything and everything….and as they connect with how much they receive in life, how much they are fulfilled by having the opportunity to give, to reciprocate in the flow of energy in life, they will begin to connect with….and desire more growth with….their spiritual core.
Q: Can you explain the importance of Halloween to you and what we can do to celebrate a bit more “authentically”. Aside from dressing up and trick or treating, what are some basic, simple practices we can try that will improve our metaphysical state?
A: Halloween is also known as Hallows or Samhain (pronounced Sow-een). It is the time of year when the veil – the barrier between the world we live in and the spirit world is the thinnest. We receive messages more clearly, our intuition is keener, and many are more drawn to their spirituality, or perhaps first finding it at this time of year. A few lovely things that anyone can do – from any walk of life, are: a) Light a white candle (the 7 day unmarked novena glass candles from the supermarket are wonderful for this) and honor your ancestors. You don’t need to have known, let alone, LIKED your Great Uncle Dave, but he and all the rest of your ancestors experienced life which brought you here and wisdom and energy come to you through them. Just honor them by saying you appreciate them and all they experienced and how that has impacted and supported (even if through harsh lessons) your life. B) PUMPKINS – Not cliché at all! Pumpkins themselves are protective in nature, and when carved as a Jack O Lantern they are very much a source of supernatural protection. They were first carved in ancient times to scare away the spirits that walk this plane on Hallows night. C) Apples – eat them, drink them, decorate with them. Apples are the fruit of wisdom, mysticism, love, prosperity and protection. When you cut an apple open width wise (along its girth line) there is a natural star formation created by the seeds. This five pointed star represents the four elements (earth, air, fire, water) and Spirit all in balance.
Adding these items and simple rituals to your holiday will align you with the true essence of the day and bring great meaning to it as well.
Q: Is Magick something we can all tap into or do you have to be specifically born into it?
A: Magick is in all of us. Magick is the intensity of our desires, which directed by our will, moves the flow of energy in the direction we desire it to go, and accomplish what we will for it to. EVERYONE can do that. Truly everyone DOES do that. We have all wished on a birthday candle, prayed etc. This is the same principle. Do those who are born from a magickal lineage have a leg up in terms of power? I do not believe it is in our DNA to be inherited that way. My belief, and experience as someone in that category, is that we feel more comfortable and confident in our magickal practices because we feel it is part of us through our ancestors. Anytime, someone feels they are in the place in life in which they belong, they are stronger for it! Also many, though of course in this day and age, not as many as in generations past, inherited books of magickal recipes and spells, and/or learned at their ancestors’ knee which of course is wonderful knowledge to receive in a unique and powerful way.
Q: You also do readings for people, tell me what that is like for you.
A: As an intuitive reader, it is my honor to be trusted to look into someone’s life – be it a past life, their present life, or their future. It is a HUGE responsibility to be properly aligned with one’s intuitive gifts so that you receive the information they are requiring, and you don’t color what you hear or see in the cards with your own thoughts, opinions, or biases. I am always moved, and so deeply grateful to be able to provide someone with insight they need to make choices going forward, or even to receive closure and comfort from past experiences. As an empath (also known as a ‘sensitive’) it is often very challenging for me as I feel their desire, urgency, desperation, and hope, just as strongly as if it were my own. Again, clarity and objectivity are key. I never give readings when tired, under the weather or when any such distraction prevails. Every person I read for, needs me at my best.
Q: From a spiritual and possibly a bit mystical standpoint, what do you make of the state of our world today? The environmental issues we face as well as the issues surrounding human rights and how we treat one another?
A: When I look at our world I see fear and the terrible results of it. Fear of not being accepted, fear of others being different than us as that can challenge our own validity, fear of loss and lack, and on and on. This causes overindulgence, overspending, hate crimes, trashing of our planet. To me it is all part and parcel of fear having gotten the upper hand and humanity trying to grasp control over their environment, surroundings, pleasure level, survival, and stability. Not to sound like a Hallmark card but truly LOVE is the key. Love of self enough to be not be threatened by others’ individuality. Love of the Universe, knowing and understanding that it feeds us and shelters us. Love of the Divine, however each person sees The Greater Source, and trusting we will not be forsaken, that The Divine ‘has this’ and we needn’t try and take control over matters…instead we should all act with responsibility and respect for ourselves, others and Mother Nature.
Q: Do you have any good stories you could share with us about your experiences with the world of Magick?
A: Oh my YES! Too many to choose from. I have experiences that range from the ‘how do I politely reply to this’ situation of people asking for spells to 
change their eye color, to seeing spirits, casting my own magickal spells and having them manifest in record time, to seeing clients ecstatically embrace a whole new reality when information from a reading or practice has turned their life in the right direction. I think to truly answer that I should start sharing a story a week on my blog J.
Q: Is there one thing we should all be doing more of to connect with our own inner power?
A: As I mentioned earlier, gratitude is key. When we are conscious of all that we have, and all that we are, we cannot also contain fear. Fear to me is the true ‘F word’ as it is the ultimate destroyer. When we feel gratitude, we know our own strength, we know we are connected to others, as well as to something greater than us, and that is truly aligning with our inner power. Also meditation – no mat or zen music required if that doesn’t float your boat. Just some quiet time, eyes closed, breathe, and hear your true inner voice. What you REALLY want….not what or whom you want but WHAT you want…the WHY behind our superficial desires and feelings. Those two are first steps…and forever steps to spirituality, and will certainly ignite a spark to know and experience more.
Q: You have a website where people can connect with you and purchase some items. Tell me about that.
A: I actually have two online shops. By Light of the Moon (www.bylightofthemoon.com) is my online magickal shop where I offer my spiritual services like readings, cleansings, metaphysical consultation and coaching, as well as the magickal products I create. Based on my years of intense study as well as information I did receive via family line, I formulate every magickal blend that I sell. All oils, bath salts, incense, candles, and spell kits are personally hand crafted by me in the appropriate timing for the desired goal of each product. I carry such things as Prosperity Oil, Banishing Oil, and of course love spells and hundreds of other products used in magickal practice by witches and non-witches alike.
