Mark Munroe is a singer-songwriter from Canada who is also an accomplished model as well as an actor. He was born and raised in the little town of Schomberg, Ontario, where he starred in musicals starting at age 5. As a model, he has graced the pages of Cosmopolitan Magazine and has starred in countless ad campaigns. On the music front, Mark fronted the internationally known band IM Munroe. Now, Mark is embarking on a solo career and ready to take the music industry by storm.
There is much more to Mark than the acting, modeling, and music. He is has also overcome personal challenges that could have prevented him from ever attempting all that he has. In his teens, Mark had gained weight but once he put his mind to it, he was able to shed 100 pounds. He also chose to come out publicly on his blog, which I am sure inspired countless people and helped others to feel less alone in their own struggles.
I have been wanting to interview Mark for a while now and I am very happy to bring this to you:
Q: Music has always been a part of your life. Did you always know you wanted to perform? Do you play any instruments?
A: Music has always been a huge part of my life, since I was a little boy who learned to play the piano, and sing in the church kids choir, and then when I was 12 recorded my first EP.
Even when I was a child I was already making plans to be an entertainer.
Q: You lost 100 pounds, how long ago was that? Do you have any advice for people who are going through similar struggles?
A: In my teenage years I gained a lot of weight, and by the time I was 19 I was so ready to shed the weight and start fresh. From the time I was 19 – 22 I spent all my extra energy in loosing the 85 pounds i needed to get to the weight that I wanted to be, well I smashed that and lost 100 pounds in the approximately 2 1/2 years.
The thing with weight is that for feeling good and being healthy it’s good to be a certain weight based on your size, gender etc, but at the end of the day, the greatest lesson that I learned from all of it, is that loving yourself in the good and bad is what really matters, for me being happy, it wasn’t ever about a number on a scale but a feeling inside.
As for the working out itself, you have to do your own homework and find what food, exercise, and activities work for you, cause if you don’t enjoy what your doing, you won’t stick with it, and you’ll gain the weight back.
My greatest advise for some loosing weight is FIND WHAT WORKS FOR YOU, and make sure that you can sustain it!
A: I was bullied a lot when I was a kid cause I was different and did my own thing. There were a few times when my Dad pushed me to stand up for myself and I did, and that really made a big difference, in that people mainly left me alone after I did.
My advise is believe in yourself, know that you are worth it, and don’t be afraid to stand up for yourself, or talk to someone who can help you.
Q: You wrote and released your upcoming album. What did you learn through this process? Anything that surprised you about he experience?
A: I always learn so much when recording, i think that I was reminded again that it’s ok to let go, and let other people in to help you, a lot in my career I have been very controlling of what happens, and sometimes especially in music you need to learn to work with and feed off others.
Q: Acting, Modeling, Music… you pretty much do it all. Which is your favorite? The most challenging?
A: I think my love for entertainment has just opened up my mind to thinking I can do anything in this industry, wether that’s really true or not lol I love making music, being on stage, in front of the camera, but i think the most challenging part is actually trying to be great in all 3.
Q: You are no stranger to music, you had a band, IM Munroe. Can you tell me a little about that experience? How does it differ from your current project and direction?
A: Yeah, I recorded 2 EP’s (with Ilysium 1998-2006) and then a full record with IMMunroe (2009)
Well it’s kind of funny, i’ve gone from alternative, to rock, to pop and now dance/retro/pop I think the biggest thing for me is that in music i’ve never been able to do exactly what I wanted to until “Secrets and Lies” (2010) and now!
Q: Will you be doing any music videos for the songs on “The Life That I Designed”?
A: Yes, I released “The Singles” the first EP to show people what I’m about and what I do, and then I will be releasing “The Life That I Designed” later this year with a music video for the first single.
A: It’s was a really great experience all round, and what really surprised me was the people that wrote to me about there situations and there lives, which was wonderful, I think at the end of the day, I just did it cause I am so comfortable and accepted in my life and I just wanted other people to know reaching that comfort, like sharing it with thousands of people is possible and should be the way it is everywhere!
Q: Any plans to tour? How about coming to the US to play?
A: One of my #1 goals/plans for this summer is to tour North America (Canada and US) and head overseas in the fall!
Q: You are very active on Social Media. Do you find it helpful in the music business?
A: Social media can be so much fun, and even better, it is the perfect way to be able to interact with fans, friends, and like minded people, and it really is an amazing tool in this business or probably any!
Q: Speaking of Social Media, where can we find you? Twitter, Facebook, websites, etc?
A: I’m Everywhere!
Q: Is there a release date for “The Life That I Designed”?
A: Not yet, but I am hoping for sometime this summer!
Q: Who would you like to work with on future recording projects? Producers, singers, musicians?
A: OMG there are so many great ones, I would have to say David Bowie, Depeche Mode, Mary J Blige, and Madonna
Q: Anything else on the horizon for Mark Munroe? Acting? Modeling?
A: I am ALWAYS looking for new projects, I just short for a new campaign, I currently have several modelling contracts, but am really focused on the music right now!
Q: What would you like to leave your fans with?
A: My heartfelt thanks! I am reminded every day how lucky I am to be living out my dreams, so to everyone who has, does and will support me, Thank you and all my love!
Run over and check out Mark’s music. I am sure we will be hearing lots about him in the near future and I look forward to seeing him when he comes to the US on tour.
